At Freedom Insurance we understand that no two cancers are the same and that’s why we look at each case on its individual merits in order to provide you with the best cover available. We know treatment can vary depending on the severity and type of cancer, we aim to provide cover regardless of whether you’ve been treated by radiotherapy, chemotherapy or had the tumour surgically removed. If you’re currently undergoing treatment for cancer or are awaiting surgery, it can be more difficult to obtain full cover, but we will still endeavour to find you a policy which meets your needs.
The main advantage of obtaining cancer travel insurance is knowing that in the event it causes a problem either prior to or during your trip, you will be covered for anything related directly or indirectly to the condition. If for example you have a stoma in place due to an ileostomy/colostomy for bowel cancer and this was to cause a problem while you are away ‘standard’ travel insurance wouldn’t necessarily cover you for this. If, however you have taken out a specialist insurance which specifically includes complications due to the cancer then cover would apply.
If you’re travelling with friends or family you can also elect to add them onto the same specialist travel insurance policy so that if any trip complications were to arise relating to either person, everyone on the policy would be covered to claim for this. This would include claims for cancellation of the trip or emergency medical treatment abroad whether it’s related to the cancer or another unrelated medical condition. It is crucial to declare any cancer-related medical conditions to avoid denial of coverage for claims related to those conditions.

Speak to your GP or consultant regarding your travel plans
Discuss your travel destination with your GP, they maybe be able to advise on appropriate destinations, vaccinations and any recommended precautions you should take. If you are undergoing treatment, they can often arrange this around your travel plans.
Treatment plan
Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy can weaken your immune system - discuss risk of infection and ensure you are vaccinated for your travel. Take all your medication and extras in case of delays, loss or theft.
Put yourself first
Be careful of skin damage as cancer treatments can make your skin sensitive. Avoid sun exposure - and reflections of water and snow. Stay hydrated, carry antibacterial hand gel, keep your hands clean and make good food choices - all of these will help avoid germs and infections.
